Sylvia G. Borda is an Associate Researcher at the Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory at the University of British Columbia, and an Instructor at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. Her interests lie in working in both photography and new media art production.

2006 Feature artist to launch, Virtual Museums of Canada, Net Art Portal
Invited by Virtual Museums of Canada curator, Michael Alstad, in conjunction with the Toronto Photographer's Gallery to launch the first Canadian federal portal of net driven art.
  Guest Curator, East Kilbride Arts Centre, Scotland
Asked to curate a series of national exhibitions profiling recent MFA graduates throughout Scotland.
2005 Artist in Residence, East Kilbride Arts Centre, Scotland
Launching the international residence program at East Kilbride Arts Centre in joint collaboration with the Scottish Arts Council, South Lanarkshire Council and Rutherglen Cultural Centre. Was the moderator and keynote speaker at the parallel Engage Seminar, addressing development and use of new media practice.

Curation and Media Curriculum development

Curated and managed a net art portal featuring over 30 artists from Pacific Asia, Europe and North America. This web portal is partnership of new media curators and international artists addressing the definition of Net Art. This year's project included guest curators Keith Donnelly from Scotland and from Taiwan: Amy Cheng and Esther Lu. Project premise will be further developed for Centre for Art and Technology (CART) UK and will be introduced as part of a New Media graduate program at University of Westminister, LondonSee http://www.ontherundesign.com.

Invited by curator, Liane Davison, to work in tandem with BC new media artists to present and launch the newly redesignated Media Galleries at the Surrey Art Gallery.

Teaching digital visual arts (Photoshop, Illustator, QuarkXpress, QuickTime, digital video editing) at both the third and fourth year level to general visual art students. Students learn about new media development, artists and history through both lectures and on-line research projects. Both courses address digital output and involve students in producing artworks from proposal to end product. Each class focuses on learning techniques, concepts and histories in relation to traditional art practices and processes. Students become versed in digital photography, lithography, video, painting, audio and other pictorial based practices

  Curator, Scripted Exhibition
Worked with Gallery 69 (Steven Tong and Sally Lee), in addition, to writer, Christine D'Onfofrio to present a curated exhibition of nearly 20 young emerging artists from the Lower Mainland district. The show focused on the themes of language and digital cultural.

Researched and wrote essay about historical photographic practices for the Presentation House Gallery publication "H.G.Cox: British Columbia Pictorialist."
  Fine Arts Digital Media Lecturer, University of British Columbia
Course addressed science, art, and semiotics - how are art and meaning created from digital delivery forms such as interactive and audio CD ROMs. The course explored the implications of social economies and organizations in relation to the dissemination of new media products. Concepts of digital authoring from the perspective of individuals to larger networked communities were examined. Weblogs served as platforms for research, dialogue, and interaction with other institutions and individuals . Projects included a term paper (2000 + words) and an end of term exhibition at Gallery 69 in Vancouver.

Facilitated dialogue and quality assurance on behalf of several museum content developers (Montreal Planetarium/Le Planétarium de Montréal, Glenbow Museum and Canadian Heritage Information Network,) with the contracted development telecommunication team, SympaticoBell, in the development of wireless games and content applications related to a Virtual Museum of Canada web exhibition, "Cosmic Quest: Discovering Astronomy through Science and Culture"
Oversaw all storyboards (technical and architectural schemes) for the launch and development of the Virtual Museum's first piloted wireless project in partnership with SympaticoBell.

Researched and surveyed current use and viability of PDAs and handhelds in the museum and education sectors, as well as preparing FAQ sheets on content development , trends and use of PDAs in learning and heritage access.   Adjunct Curator, Centre A and South Asian Visual Arts Collective (SAVAC)
Working in tandem with curators Rachel James, Sadira Rodrigues, and Gu Xiong, was involved in reviewing, assessing, selecting and mentoring emerging artists involved in the upcoming Transculturation and Globalization New Media project and exhibition (scheduled for 2003). I also aided in the transglobalization new media artists’ workshop and conference (July 2002) held at the SFU Wosk Center for Learning and at UBC. The co-curated project will be exhibited nationally and will be toured as part of the Asian Heritage Month activities in May 2003. The project is sponsored by the Canada Arts Council Media Dissementation Project department, Centre A Gallery (Vancouver) and SAVAC (Toronto).

2000 - 1999 Executive Producer, Expo 2000 Website and Kiosk, Canada Pavilion
Managed and directed content design of both the production of a website and kiosk application for the Canadian Pavilion, Expo 2000, Hanover, Germany. The project specifically focused on giving voice and media representation to First Nations groups within Canada. Worked specifically with the Haida Nation to develop an aboriginal response to illustrate their contemporary and traditional ways of life, land and resource management.

  Curator, Dynamo Arts Association Gallery, Vancouver, British Columbia
Directed and maintained gallery space (800 sq feet) in conjunction with an arts advisory board at Dynamo Arts Association Gallery. Responsible for studio artist visits, catalog writing and all gallery promotions. Keynote exhibitions included New Brunswick artist Jason Fitzpatrick (east:west conduit 1999); Lisa Fedorak, Vancouver, British Columbia (2000) and a Lower Mainland tri-university/college new media set of exhibitions (Jan-March 2000) promoting digital media, photography, and video arts, entitled "Convergence".
2000 Guest Writer, Bau Xi Gallery
Requested by exhibiting artist Marcus Bowcott to write a critical essay about his work for gallery publication.
1999 Guest Curator, Anodyne Gallery, Vancouver, British Columbia
Curated a photography exhibition entitled 2 New Vancouver Photographers. The exhibition profiled the new artworks over 20 works by emerging artists Susan Washbern and Claude Elezam. The show addressed how artists undertake home and workplace surveillance – the common becomes the absurd, the anticipated turns into the unknown.
1998 Visual Arts Curator, Vancouver Maritime Museum
Worked in tandem with Vancouver Maritime Museum staff to curate incoming historic and contemporary exhibitions on the themes of aquatic, naval and port history for the Finley Gallery wing. Responsible for contacting artists, hanging exhibitions, co-ordinating artist openings, and writing press releases and catalogues.
